If you’re looking to score a great deal on an elliptical, the ProForm Carbon H10 Elliptical can be yours in exchange for a three-year commitment to iFit. The manufacturer offers this deal on machines from time to time, and in my experience, it’s a great deal. Coming in as the junior model to the ProForm Carbon HIIT H14, the H10 is a little smaller with a few less features, but if you’re on a budget, this could be all you really need.

Right off the bat, one of the things I love about ellipticals is the way they never fail to tucker me out. I can slow-walk a treadmill, but due to the stand-up pedaling required of the elliptical, your own bodyweight comes into play and it’s a bit more like mountain climbing. This provides a total body workout with minimal stress on the joints relative to treadmill walking. The H10 sports a stride with 10″ vertical and 5″ horizontal. An inertia-enhanced flywheel generates 24 levels of silent magnetic resistance (SMR) which is probably more than you’ll ever use. Frankly, I can get a quad-burning workout with just a few levels due to the variance of speeds. One of the big benefits to SMR is the smooth and silent nature of the transition between levels, and it requires less maintenance than say a treadmill.

The pricing is the key here. In exchange for a three-year commitment to the iFit Family Plan, priced at $39 per month or $1,404 up front, you get both the machine and the programming. The H14 meanwhile is priced at $1,799 and you’d have to pay for the iFit app separately, which means an additional $1,404 over three years. In all fairness, iFit is one of the best workout apps I’ve ever used. Unlike its peers, it offers automatic trainer control which lets either the program, or live trainers, control the resistance for you. This comes in handy when you’re participating in any of the travel series workouts where you can climb mountains alongside trainers. The iFit program also features Bluetooth heart rate monitors which via ActivePulse technology can auto-adjust the resistance to match your heart rate. Like most of its peers, iFit can be downloaded onto any device and taken with you. It has a virtual library with tens of thousands of on-demand workouts in every category of exercise, from weights to yoga and nutrition.

The H10 features a 10″ high-definition touchscreen which is designed to work with iFit. Yes, you can use the machine without the program, but it goes into a manual mode and the screen doesn’t work with other programming. Why We Like It

Right off the bat, the biggest plug I’d make for the ProForm Carbon HIIT H10 is the purchase deal for a three-year iFit membership. Yes, the machine works without iFit in a manual mode, but as with most iFit-enabled machines, if you’re not going to use the program which affords you automatic trainer control and heart rate training, then you might as well shop elsewhere. Normally you’d have to buy both the machine, for say $1,404, and pay for the app at $39 per month. This way, you just pay for the app and the machine comes along with, which nearly halves the cost. Aside from that, what I like about this elliptical is you’re a machine you can’t outgrow. No matter how fit you get, 24 levels of silent magnetic resistance will tax your body to the max.

It Has A Great 10″ HD Touchscreen

ProForm makes a good touchscreen, that’s for sure. I’ve had a great experience with not just this unit, but other ProForm machines in that the touchscreen is clear and easy to use. A 10″ screen is a nice size, about the same as a tablet. Built to work with iFit, the screen will let you interact with live trainers and classes, as well as report feedback from your workout. You can’t access Netflix or the broader Internet with it, but the speaker volume is great for the workouts and if you prefer to have a built-in screen as opposed to bringing your own with a tablet attachment, this is a good way to go.

Machine Comes With 3-Year iFit Deal

The iFit app is my personal favorite and I’ve used it for years. ProForm, NordicTrack, and Freemotion machines all come equipped with it as they’re manufactured by the same corporate family, and if you’re into interactive training it’s simply da’ bomb. The iFit app is the only one of which I’m aware that provides both live trainer-led workouts in real time, as well as on-demand videos. It also features automatic trainer control which means the elliptical will adjust the resistance settings to match the program. I’ve also used their Bluetooth heart rate monitor as part of the ActivePulse Technology which adjusts the resistance to match your heart rate. An iFit Family Membership runs $39 per month and can support up to five different user profiles. The individual package is $180 per year, or $15 per month. As with most programs like it, you can download the app to any smart device and take it with you. The program not only stores your workout metrics but offers personalized nutrition counseling as well as program suggestions for strength, yoga, running, biking, and boxing. One fhing to note, iFit-enabled machies can in fact work without the program, but they operate in a manual mode without the automatic trainer control and other features.

24 Levels Silent Magnetic Resistance

Whether you have roommates or neighbors, have no fear. Magnetic resistance is silent. You’ll actually make more noise with your own feet and breathing than the machine will. It’s also the smoothest of the forms of resistance, much better than the old days with friction-based systems. Easy to maintain, it’s no wonder to me that machines from ellipticals to bikes and rowers are all going the way of SMR. And with 24 levels of resistance, you’re unlikely to outgrow this machine.

This elliptical has a 10″ vertical stride, so to be on the same side, I’d add at least 15″ to your own height when estimating ceiling height requirements. The good news is it’s relatively compact and upright so it won’t take up as much floor space, or be as hard to move through doors, as a wider unit.

What We Like:

  The fact you get the machine with a three-year commitment to iFit means you’re nearly halving the price if you were to buy both. At $1,404, or three years at $39 per month, this strikes me as a great deal relative to its peers such as the the Bowflex M6, which is priced at $1,299.

• Full Body Workout

  With multi-grip handlebars, you’ll get an upper body workout as well as lower. Given the 10″ vertical stride versus 5″ horizontal, this is a bit like climbing and cross-country skiing combined.

• Bluetooth Features

  The elliptical comes with terrific Bluetooth speakers and heart rate monitoring potential. I’ve had no problems syncing my devices quickly with this unit and the speakers are terrific.

• Front-Mounted Wheels and Oversized Leveling Feet

  You’ll be able to wheel this about your house easily and the machine remains balanced while you’re pedaling away. Given the compact nature of the design, you won’t have to worry about taking it through doorways as much as others.

• Silent Magnetic Resistance

  This is the preferred type of resistance for most exercise machines these days. Much smoother and less noisy than the older types, you’ll zip from one level to another in silence.

What We Don’t Like:

• Shorter Warranty

  This machine’s warranty is 10 years for the frame, two years for mechanical parts, and 90 days for labor. A lot of ProForm’s competitors are offering lifetime warranties on the frame these days.

• iFit-Dependent

  That’s the proverbial elephant in the room. The machine will work without iFit, but you lose a lot of features, and you’re pretty much locked in for at least three years.

This Elliptical Could Be For You If You Want:

• A low-impact, high-intensity workout
• A free elliptical that comes with three years of iFit
• An elliptical with 24 levels of magnetic resistance
• An elliptical with a 10″ touchscreen screen

Our Verdict:

I give a huge thumbs up to this elliptical provided you’re comfortable with a three-year commitment to iFit. Once the three years is up you can do whatever you want, but obviously that’s the plan here. That said, irrespective of your own size, this unit should be a great workout partner. With a 10″ vertical stride you’re getting all the benefits of a stepper with the 5″ horizontal glide of skiis. I can’t see anyone outgrowing the 24 levels of resistance, and there are literally thousnds of workouts available via iFit. You’ll be trimmer in no time if you use this regularly, that’s for sure.
